Today we’re going to take a look at the inaugural episode of Smoky Mountain Wrestling. I’ve reviewed some random episodes from later in this promotion’s run, but it looks like the entire thing is up on YouTube so I might as well start at the very beginning (a very good place to start, or so I’ve been told).

The promotion was formed by Jim Cornette in “October 1991 upon leaving World Championship Wrestling with Stan Lane, Tim Horner and Sandy Scott. The promotion was backed financially by music producer Rick Rubin. The first events and TV tapings were held in October and November 1991. Matches from these shows were first shown in February 1992.” [1]

SMW (July 25, 1992)

I’ve kind of fallen in love with Smoky Mountain Wrestling, and since there’s a ton of it up on YouTube in these our modern times, I’ve decided to check out some more of it. Today we’re going to be taking a look the July 25, 1992 episode for one reason and one reason only. Some time back I saw a squash match where Brian Lee wrecked shop on a Nazi that came from this particular episode and I really wanted to see if there was any other context for that match existing that wasn’t a part of the standalone match I saw. So away we go.

SMW (February 19, 1994)

We’re in a high school gym in Jellico, TN for Smoky Mountain Wrestling! The hosts for this shindig are Bob Caudle and “Dirty” Dutch Mantell. Dutch isn’t fucking around and draws a name out of a hat for the Beat the Champ Challenge right away.

He draws Larry Santo so the match is going to be Santo going up against the TV Champ, Robbie Eagle. Larry Santo appears with Chris Candido and Candido says he’s going to give Santo a five minute wrestling lesson in the locker room which will be more than enough for him to beat Robbie Eagle.
