WWF Los Super Astros (January 10, 1999)

I put this on YouTube and gave it a watch so I figure I might as well do a real half-assed write-up of what I saw. Don’t expect particularly detailed accounts of the matches because I was just sort of half paying attention and don’t expect detailed recaps of any angles or interviews because the show is in Spanish and that’s not a language I speak.

WCW Festival de Lucha (January 27, 1999)

I was a big WCW guy and this is one of those shows that I’d read about taking place on message boards back in the day but also one that unfortunately never saw the light of day. When I first got the WWE Network it was one of the first things I went looking for but at that time all they had up was a single match that saw Konnan, Rey Mysterio Jr., Hector Garza & Silver King go up against Chris Jericho, Norman Smiley, Johnny Swinger & Lenny Lane. That is no longer the case and the entire show is now available though it lacks commentary or any sort of chyrons so I’m going to attempt to review it in spite not possessing Professor Iron “Mike” Tenay levels of knowledge of lucha libre so don’t expect much more beyond “So and so did some really cool dives” levels of play by play. Let’s get down to it.

WWF Sunday Night Heat (January 10, 1999)

WWF Sunday Night Heat Logo 1998-2000

It’s rainy and gross here today which seems like a perfectly cromulent reason to sit in my living room and watch a random episode of Sunday Night Heat from 1999. The episode I’m looking at today is the January 10, 1999 episode because it apparently features a Lion’s Den Match I have no memory of even existing and if there’s one thing I love almost as much as old C-Shows it’s obscure gimmick match so if there’s a C-Show that also features a wacky gimmick match you better believe I’m going to check that shit out!

WCW Presents MTV BeachBrawl (March 12, 1999)

WCW Presents MTV BeachBrawl

So after checking out WCW SnowBrawl yesterday I decided to watch WCW’s second 1999 offering on MTV, WCW Presents MTV BeachBrawl which aired at some point over MTV’s Spring Break Weekend programming block. The information about the date of this show seems to be incorrect on all the usually reputable sites for this sort of professional wrestling minutia but am pretty sure that it was filmed and possibly aired on March 12, 1999 (Fear Factory played during the event and I found this show on a list of their tour dates that seems pretty legit). They showed clips from this event on the March 15, 1999 episode of Nitro so the date makes sense. Kidman is also the Cruiserweight Champion here and would lose the title on that same episode of Nitro so that’s the date we’re going with here.

Since no one outside of idiots like me and the Germans who seem to run every single wrestling database on the internet actually cares when the fuck a shitty WCW special on MTV aired let’s get on with the actual review.

WCW SnowBrawl ’99 (February 6, 1999)

WCW SnowBrawl

In the late 90s, WCW had an odd relationship with MTV. I remember DDP and Raven filming an angle on Total Request Live and there was some weird thing where Public Enemy and maybe High Voltage fought each other in the rain in Times Square.

As part of this working relationship, on January 23, 1999, WCW sent a group of wrestlers to Big Bear, California to film a special that would air a couple weeks later as part of MTV’s Snowed-In Weekend (think MTV’s Spring Break only on a ski mountain). That show is what we’re looking at today. Why? Because I had to fold laundry and I happened upon it on YouTube.

WWF Unforgiven 1999 (September 26, 1999)

WWF Unforgiven 1999

Why am I watching Unforgiven 1999? Because I’m a glutton for punishment and want to watch all the matches that won the Wrestling Observer’s Worst Match of the Year Award and this one has the infamous Kennel From Hell match, which apparently was the worst professional wrestling match of 1999, that’s why! So let’s get our attitudes on and check it out!
