ECW (June 20, 2006)

Ecw_logo

We get a cold open with a fortune teller (Shelly Martinez/Ariel/That Lady With the Boobs/etc.) using tarot cards to recap what happened on Raw the night before. Apparently ECW invaded and Sabu left John Cena bleeding. Tonight there will be a tag team event pitting Van Dam & Angle against Edge & Orton. For all the dumb shit WWE’s ECW did I think this is honestly a pretty cool way to recap a show.

ECW One Night Stand 2006 (June 11, 2006)

ECW-One-Night-Stand-2006.jpg

I guess this really should be called ECW Friends With Benefits or something since this is the second One Night Stand PPV. The show begins in true ECW fashion with a cold open. We see the rabid ECW fans packed to the rafters in the Hammerstein Ballroom chanting “ECW!” until the ECW theme song hits and Paul Heyman makes his way out to the ring to a huge pop.

Heyman thanks all the fans for being and says that with its rebirth ECW would appeal to a new, global audience. He hypes up the upcoming ECW show on Sci-Fi and tells the fans that it was because of them demanding it that ECW is coming back.

He thanks them again and tells them that ECW is going to be better than Raw or Smackdown. Oh Paul Heyman, how wrong you’d end up being, but that’s another story for another time…

Shawn Stasiak vs. Kurt Angle (WWF Survivor Series November 14, 1999)

For people who think that fans chanting random bullshit during matches is a modern problem in wrestling, go back and watch Kurt Angle’s debut. In the opening moments we get a “boring” chant as Angle does actual wrestling. From there they decide to go with a “Let’s go Red Wings!” chant. They would return to this chant several times during the match. At one point Angle gets out of the ring and gets on the mic to yell at them for having the audacity to boo an Olympic champion.

Outside of the crowd it’s a pretty fine bout of grappling though there are a couple weird things in it. First it’s so weird to hear Kurt Angle’s theme song without people chanting, “YOU SUCK!” during it and second Angle won with the Angle Slam, but Stasiak just leaped up like 2 seconds after being pinned.

WWF Invasion (July 22, 2001)

Invasion

It’s time for the Invasion. I somehow missed out on this when it happened and haven’t seen it since, but I know its reputation. Everyone does. Does the Invasion deserve the amount of shit that’s been heaped upon it? Let’s find out!

Franklin Delano Roosevelt kicks things off for us, talking about war as clips of WCW and ECW dudes invading WWF are shown. This is really a weird way to kick off a PPV. Fireworks happen. JR welcomes to the Gund Arena as we get down to the ring for action.

Kurt Angle vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (WWF Raw October 8, 2001)

Oh Invasion, why did you make so little sense?  Today we have Kurt Angle defending the WWF World Heavyweight Championship against “Alliance” Steve Austin.  Why did Steve Austin join the Alliance?  I have no idea.

Jim Ross makes up some on the fly bullshit while calling the match about Austin being obsessed with getting the WWF World Heavyweight Championship back and not actually giving a shit about the Alliance, which honestly is a pretty good reason for Austin to ally himself with the Alliance and clearly shows that Good Ol’ J.R. put a lot more thought into this entire clusterfuck of an event more than anyone else actually booking it.

William Regal (who was WWF commissioner at the time) randomly joins the Alliance in the middle of the match after spending the first half of the match being a dick to Steve Austin.  I wonder why William Regal never reverted back to Steven Regal after joining the Alliance.
